Emerging 100G QSFP28 form factor transceivers have given rise to two distinct type of laser source options; EML or "Electro-absorption Modulated Lasers" and DML or "Directly Modulated Lasers". Original designs for the 100G QSFP28 form factor consisted of EML. Due to the most recent market shortage of EML availability, designers were able to offer an alternative by employing a DML design to offset the EML supply shortage. End users are now faced with understanding the differences between an EML and DML design while making informed decisions regarding applications and network deployments. The technical differences between DML and EML design will be presented as well as tradeoffs in performance.
